Assignment: Reflect on how your personal learning network has changed and grown during the course of this workshop. Discuss your plans for how you plan to continue to grow your learning network and how you hope to contribute to the professional learning of your administrative colleagues.
My Personal Learning Network has developed so much throughout the course of this workshop. From the beginning of this course, I was really unfamiliar with the term "PLN", but I knew it was one I needed to understand and begin using in my educational practice. I really didn't realize I even HAD a PLN until I began the assigned reading. Now I understand that my PLN stretches to so many sources, from my colleagues and peers with whom I teach and serve on a daily basis, to former colleagues with whom I consult occasionally. It now includes my Google Reader subscriptions and my favorite educators on Twitter, as well as the educators I have met through this course!
My plan for the continual growth of my PLN includes staying up-to-date on the most influential educators in social networking. I plan to follow the several blogs I added to my Google Reader account to stay current on the latest issues affecting educators, students, and other stakeholders. I also plan to investigate other blogs, as I have time, in hopes to find contributors that specialize in my field of elementary education. I hope to become a more active participant in these blogs, adding my experiences and insight through comments.
Along those same lines, I want to become an ACTIVE blogger for my students, parents, and colleagues. I hope to be a blogger that is added to someone else's PLN so as to connect to many more people, thus building my PLN even more.
In addition, I would like to really invest in the phenomenon that is Twitter. I already feel much more educated on this tool, and I can't believe I'm finally participating! I honestly never thought to use Twitter as part of my PLN until this course. I've decided to use my Twitter account solely for the purposes of education and building my network. I'm already very interested in the educators and administrators I am currently following, and I look forward to following more people who specialize in my same area.
I hope that my participation and enthusiasm for building my own PLN will result in the professional learning of my own school administrator. Considering I am not serving in an administrative role yet, I hope to be an influence as a classroom teacher. I plan to begin the new school year by using many of the Web 2.0 tools I have been introduced to, and I hope this use is noticed by my administrator and adopted by her. My implementation of a classroom blog that features frequent podcasts will be a great way to share my ideas with my principal while exposing her to how it can be used in our school as a whole. I would hope that this exposure would inspire her to create her own blog, as well as encourage other faculty members to do the same. In addition, I hope to be able to facilitate professional development that focuses on Web 2.0 tools and Professional Learning Networks. i already know that my principal has a plan for creating PLN's within our school building this year, so I hope to be a helpful contributor to this endeavor.
I've learned so much throughout this course, and I hope I can share my knowledge with the faculty and administrators with whom I serve. Thank you so much for reading!
Jaime,
ReplyDeleteI agree with your idea to have a Twitter account that is dedicated to your PLN. You don't want that information coming to your personal Twitter account. I can highly recommend HootSuite as a free way to manage multiple Twitter accounts. I hope you have a great rest of the summer and a great year teaching.
Tim
Thanks so much for this recommendation. I definitely want to investigate HootSuite. You have a great summer and school year, too!
DeleteHey Jamie, what a joy it has been to have you in this class and share in your enthusiasm and experiences. I loved reading your post--although I didn't always comment on each person's post in each of the sessions the as there were just too many! Best of luck in your endeavor to be an active blogger. I think you will definitely be noticed by your current administrator and the best way to lead is by example. I know this is true because the Master Teacher, Jesus, teaches with that method! :-) I will look for your classroom blog...please return here and post or link the URL, or send me an email invite!
ReplyDeleteI also have a colleague who is a heavy Twitter user and has held numerous workshops. Shoot me an email and I can send you a PDF of one of her handouts. You'll need a QR Reader on your smart phone to scan the links, but it was a great workshop and I think it will assist you with developing a comfort level using Twitter.
Well I just tried to post this and something went wrong. Thankfully it was saved on my clipboard! Please ignore the personal message I sent from the eClass--maybe this time it will post correctly.
Thank you so much for your encouragement and thoughtful response to my post! I have learned so much in this course about how to put myself out there, so maybe I will start to be noticed as a leader in my system. I've only been with this system for one year, and it's sometimes difficult to work your way back into that level of respect.
DeleteI would love to have the Twitter PDF that you mentioned. I don't mind giving you my e-mail address here: jguthrie@blountboe.net. Thanks so much for that!
I hope you have a great school year!
Jamie, I , like you, didn't really know what a PLN was even though I had a mini one and was using it. I think Twitter and Blogging fits perfectly in the lower school world ....so dive in and go for it!!!
ReplyDeleteJaime,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your post and like your technique of writing. You will shine this next year in your efforts to blog for your class/school!!
I am also thinking Pinterest would be an interesting tool for our PLN's. What do you think?
I think I have met you, maybe at UNA or somewhere in the shoals.
Jennifer Lindsey
I think that you have a good plan in place. It is so nice to see younger teachers who are so excited about teaching and learning new things to help their students. You are right about leading by example. Hopefully, your principal will get on board with the Web 2.0 tools in the near future. It is sometimes hard to make suggestions when you are considered to be the new kid on the block. I wish you much success with your plan.
ReplyDeleteGood job, Jamie. I do hope you continue to make podcasts for your students. It sounds like your administrator is not leading by example :-) Perhaps she'll be inspired once you and other teachers implement blogs, podcasts, etc. I'm only using Twitter for professional reasons too. Celebs tend to tweet too much for my taste :)
ReplyDeleteJaime,
ReplyDeleteYou and I are in the same boat! I too am a elementary classroom teacher with a masters in administration. I created my blog for the same reason as you...to connect my students and parents to our school and classroom. I love it! I was going to let you know that along with many of the same networks that you have used (Twitter, Facebook, Google Reader, etc.) I have heavily used Pinterest as a way to connect with other classroom teachers. I have gotten soooo many ideas from them. If you are on Pinterest, look me up. I have pinned many great ideas on my boards.
